The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel is a church in Sitka in the US -Bundesstaat Alaska and the Cathedral of the Diocese of Alaska of the Orthodox Church in America ( Orthodox Church in America ).

history

The original church was built from wood between 1844 and 1848 under the Russian colonial rule of Alaska and was the seat of the Russian Orthodox diocese that spanned all of North America. In 1872, five years after the sale of Alaska to the United States , the Church became, and continues to be, the seat of the Alaskan Orthodox Diocese of America. On June 13, 1962, St. Michael's Cathedral was granted National Historic Landmark status . In 1966 the original church burned down and was replaced by a faithful new building that was inaugurated in 1978.
