St. Nicholas

St. Nikolaus is the Roman Catholic Church on the East Frisian island of Langeoog .

There had been no Catholics on Langeoog since the Reformation . Only the emergence of bathing tourism brought Catholic spa guests to the island from the end of the 19th century. Since the summer of 1910, Holy Mass has been celebrated by priests outside of Germany during the travel season.

The needs of the NS armaments companies on the coast and, after the end of the war, the influx of East German expellees gave rise to a small local Catholic community, which today has 250 members. The church was built for them, but even more so for the holidaymakers, and the foundation stone was laid on January 15, 1962. She received the name of St. Nicholas , the patron saint of sailors, and was on 4 June 1964 by the Osnabrücker Bishop Helmut Wittler ordained . The plans came from Göttingen architect Lucy Hillebrand .

The first renovation and expansion work was completed in 1973. After extensive reconstruction, the church was consecrated on June 23, 2002 by Bishop Franz-Josef Bode . Today it belongs to the Coast Parish Community .

The design idea of the church is a ship's bow protruding from the earth . The tower has the shape of a fore stiffener . This earned him the nicknames seagull slide and nun slide among the Langeoogers . Since the last renovation work, the interior has been wide and bright and offers a view of the island landscape through clear glass windows. The cross is designed as a steering wheel .
