history

With the growth of the city of Opole and an increasing number of parishioners in the parish of the Holy Cross , the establishment of a new parish and church in the east of the city became necessary. Services were held in the east of the city in the former secondary school or in the nearby barracks. Due to the efforts of Prelate Joseph Kubis, construction of the St. Peter and Paul Church on what was then Strasbourg Square (today: plac Mickiewicza) began on April 23, 1923. The foundation stone was laid on June 19, 1924. The architect of the church was Arthur Reck . Despite the difficult times, the Church grew steadily from year to year. Donations came from America, among others. The bells were donated by merchants and craftsmen from Opole. The Hermann Kügler company carried out the masonry work, which has already built the old barracks, the hospital and eight different churches in the vicinity of Opole.

In May 1925 the parish Peter and Paul was created and initially had 8,000 parishioners. The first pastor of the newly founded parish was Francis Sonnek. On 26 October 1925, the St. Peter and Paul Church was by the Wroclaw Bishop Adolf Bertram dedicated to be. However, not all work on the church was finished with the inauguration. At the end of 1925 the baptismal font was installed, the tower clock was installed in 1926, and the organ was completed in 1929. The inauguration of the high altar took place on Christmas Day 1930. By 1945 the number of parishioners increased to 12,8000 people.

One of the founders of the church was Pope Pius XI. who was still in Opole in 1920 as Archbishop Achille Ratti because of the referendum in Upper Silesia . Therefore, the papal coat of arms and a gilded tiara donated after the construction are in the church .
