The Church of St. Philomena is a Roman Catholic Church in Mysore in the Diocese of Mysore , India . It was built in 1936 in neo-Gothic style based on the Cologne Cathedral .

Church patroness

According to tradition, St. Philomena of Rome was a Greek princess who was beheaded in 302 during the persecution of Christians under Diocletian .

history

In place of the current building, a church was built in 1843 by the then Maharajah Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. In 1926, Thamboo Chetty, the secretary of the Maharajah of Mysore, was able to procure a relic of the saints, which he received from Peter Pisani, the Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies. This relic was given to the Catholic clergyman Cochet, who asked the Maharajah to help him build a church in honor of St. Philomena.

Architectural style

The church was designed by the French Daly in the neo-Gothic style. The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross . In the crypt there is a statue of St. Philomena. The towers have a height of 53 m and are similar to the towers of Cologne Cathedral and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. The main nave can accommodate up to 800 people. The representations on the church windows show the salvation-historical events of the birth, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, the resurrection and the ascension of Christ.
