The church from the south

The St Andrew's Church is a small church on the Gower Peninsula in Wales . The church, protected as a Grade II * cultural monument, is located on the northern edge of the village green of the small village of Penrice.

history

The church was built in the 12th century east of a Norman ring wall . In the late 12th century, the Penrice family donated the church to the Johanniter-Kommende in Slebech . It was later transferred to the Hospital of St David in Swansea . The tower, the north transept and the south entrance hall were probably added in the 13th century, the unusually large vestibule probably also served as a community hall in the Middle Ages and as a school in the 17th century. After storm damage, the church was renovated several times in the 18th century. From 1892 to 1894 it was carefully renovated at the instigation of Olive Talbot , a daughter of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot . The Talbot family used the nearby Penrice Castle as a country residence. During the renovation, the roof was replaced, the windows enlarged and a new floor installed.

The church now belongs to the Parish of South West Gower , a parish in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon of the Church in Wales . As a rule, the church cannot be visited outside of the services.

Building description

The church is located in a walled churchyard and is surrounded by numerous weathered tombstones. The nave and the choir of the church were built in the Norman style , the nave of gray limestone, the choir of red sandstone. Due to the addition of the northern transept and the southern vestibule, it has a cross-shaped floor plan, the archway of the vestibule is already built in the Gothic style . The four-story west tower is crowned by battlements. The north transept probably served as the private chapel of the Penrice family or their heirs, the Mansel family . The church is equipped with a medieval baptismal font, which was put back in the church in 1920.
