St Andrew's House

The St Andrew's House is a business building in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 2005 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

The City of Glasgow offered the property to the St Andrew's Ambulance Association and the St Andrew's and Red Cross Scottish Ambulance Service . St Andrew's House was built there between 1966 and 1970. The architects Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin are responsible for the design . Douglas Carr Bailey was in charge of this building , while Berthold Lubetkin designed the staircase.

Both organizations used the individual parts of the building, which are connected to one another via a flatter constriction. While the St Andrew's Ambulance Association continues to use the north part as its headquarters, the premises of the Scottish Ambulance Service were in the south part. The passage between the two parts of the building has meanwhile been closed.

In 2010 the southern part of the building was included in the register of endangered buildings in Scotland. In 2014, however, the condition of the vacant building was classified as relatively good with a low risk.

description

The flat roof building stands at the intersection of Milton Street and Maitland Street north of Glasgow city center. It is one of two buildings in Scotland designed by Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin , with Lubetkin as a major pioneer of modern architecture in the United Kingdom . The north-facing facade along Milton Street shows a striking St. Andrew's cross made of red plastic, which is illuminated at night. Below is the main entrance.

Along Maitland Street, a sculpture of Saint Andrew is set into the facade on the left . It comes from the former headquarters of the association on North Street . A long, uniform facade follows on the right. It ends with the words "SCOTTISH AMBULANCE SERVICE".
