St Brandan's Stanes

St Brandan's Stanes (also called Brannan Stanes ; presumably Brendan the Traveler is meant) is a badly damaged stone circle of the Recumbent Stone Circle type . The few remaining stones are in a field at Templeton Farm, west of the A95 , south of Portsoy in Aberdeenshire , Scotland .

The stones lie in a field from which reading stones also reached the monument site. The only two stones preserved in situ measure about 1.5 × 0.7 × 1.9 m and 1.3 × 0.6 × 1.2 m and are the "flank stones" of the "lying person". There is a distance of about 2.4 m between them. There are four large blocks in front of the columns and an almost square vertical block near the east column. These stones could have belonged to the stone circle. The east column shows signs that it has recently been split and partially removed. The West has column near the base eight bowls ( English cups ). In 1866, 12 were still preserved, but some may be obscured by the changes around the base.

In 1883 an urn containing disfigured coins was found under one of the stones .

The stone circles on the River Dee

The Deeside Stone Circles form a group of Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC). About 100 of them were born between 2500 and 1500 BC. In Aberdeenshire. The ensembles of the "resting stones" are usually in the southeast and (usually) on the course of the ring.
