St Brendan's Church (Barra)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St Brendan's Church , also Roman Catholic Church of Saint Brendan , is a Roman Catholic church building on the Scottish Hebridean island of Barra . In 1980 the building was added to the Scottish Monuments Lists in Category C. The church is still in use as such today.

history

A chapel dedicated to Saint Brendan was built near the current church location in 1805 . At the time, this was the only Roman Catholic church on Barra. At the beginning of the 19th century, the building proved to be too small for the parish. In the 1830s, a letter to the Vatican asked for funds for the renovation of the church as damage to the masonry had formed. However, it was not until the 1850s that construction of today's Brendan's Church began. It was completed in 1858 and the old chapel abandoned. Only with the construction of the Church of our Lady, Star of the Sea in Castlebay was a second Roman Catholic church building on the island in 1888.
