St Matthew's Church (Paisley)
The St Matthew's Church is a church building of the Free Church Church of the Nazarene in the Scottish town of Paisley in the Council Area Renfrewshire . In 1985 the building was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.
history
The building was built between 1905 and 1907 to a design by architect W. D. McLennan, who was himself a member of the community. It was initially called St George's Church East and belonged to the Free Church of Scotland . In 1988 the Church of the Nazarene took over the building and extensively restored it. During this transition phase, there were two churches of the Free Church in Paisley. The previous building on Orchard Street was eventually abandoned.

The building is in a prominent position on a wide island in the middle of Gordon Street ( A761 ) at the junction with Bridge Street ( A726 ). Stylistically, it is described as an interpretation of Gothic architecture in the Art Nouveau style . The cost of construction was around £ 14,000. An originally planned, massive bell tower was not built for cost reasons. A large tracery of seven individual lancet windows that rise towards the center points to the east. A similar window on the opposite side of the building is made up of five lancet windows. The two-winged entrance portal is on the south side. It closes with an unadorned, massive arch segment. The one-sided transept emerges on the north side . It is made with tracery that is similar to the one on the west side, but is much smaller. The elaborate roof structure is covered with slate.
