St Molios Church

The St Molios Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Shiskine on the island of Arran in the Council Area North Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in monument category B. 19 years later it was finally upgraded to the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

A chapel consecrated to St. Molios in the village is already recorded on Blaeu's map from 1654 . In 1708 the village received its first church with a building dedicated to St. Michael. After this building increasingly fell into need of renovation in the 1880s, a new building was decided in 1886. This was built in the following years according to a design by the Scottish architect John James Burnet and opened in 1889. The total cost was £ 1900. In 1962 further parts of the building were added and in 1978 a new rectory was built.

description

The building is off the street on the southwest end of Shiskine. The masonry consists of locally broken, red sandstone , which is why the building is popularly known as the "Red Kirk" ("Red Church"). A grave slab that could have been from the 13th century is embedded in the squat bell tower. According to local lore, it once marked Molio's grave, who lived as a hermit on the island. The single bell was not originally intended and was only added towards the end of construction, at a cost of £ 70.
