St Paul's Church

The St Paul's Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish town of Glenrothes in the Council Area Fife . In 1987 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists as a single monument, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2009.

history

In 1948 Glenrothes was designated as one of the new planned cities in Scotland. Funding for new church buildings was also fixed in the planning. Since an influx from the Scottish west, where a higher proportion of Catholic residents is to be recorded, had been forecast for Glenrothes, Catholic church buildings were also planned. As a result, St Paul's Church came into being. Reginald Fairlie's draft was rejected by those responsible for the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh . Instead, it was decided to go for a design by the architecture firm Gillespie, Kidd & Coia , which had planned numerous Catholic church buildings, especially in the southwest. On June 30, 1958, St Paul's Church was opened. The total cost was £ 20,000, in line with the ceiling previously set. An originally planned community hall was never implemented.

description

St Paul's Church stands at the junction of Warout Road and Woodside Road in the east of Glenrothes. Post-war construction marks a turnaround in Scottish church construction. Isi Metzstein , at that time involved in the planning at Gillespie, Kidd & Coia as a young architect, described it as the first church building of a new generation that triggered a rethinking of the church concept in Scotland. In order to create greater proximity between the congregation and the sanctuary, it does not have an elongated floor plan, but that of a blunt segment of a circle. Furthermore, the light is not guided into the interior via side windows, but via light inlets above the sanctuary.
