history

John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, emerged as the founder of the Church . The marquess wanted a neo-Byzantine style building that he had previously studied. As an architect, Robert Weir Schultz is responsible for the design. Originally the church was supposed to be built in Troon , but the congregation there declined, so it was finally built in Galston. The name is borrowed from Hagia Sophia in Istanbul , but also honors Crichton-Stuart's mother Sophia Rawdon-Hastings from Loudoun Castle . In 1886, St Sophia's Church was completed after a year of construction.
