The public prosecutor's office (StA) in Austria represents the interests of the state in the administration of justice. In contrast to the judge , the public prosecutor's office is an authority bound by instructions and subordinate to the Federal Minister of Justice . The main task of the public prosecutor's office is to conduct the preliminary investigation and to represent and bring charges in criminal proceedings. The tasks of the public prosecutor are regulated in the Public Prosecutor's Office Act.

The public prosecutor's office represents the public as an independent judicial authority. In criminal proceedings, the prosecutor is the representative of the prosecution.
