Public Prosecutor's Office (Lithuania)

The Public Prosecutor's Office ( Lithuanian : prokuratūra ) is the authority in Lithuania that is responsible for criminal prosecution and enforcement and, as such, is part of the administration of justice .

Preliminary investigation

The current form of the investigative proceedings of the public prosecutor's offices is laid down in the Lithuanian Criminal Procedure Code , which came into force in May 2003 and replaced the previous Soviet Criminal Procedure Code. It is a one-step process and is the responsibility of the respective public prosecutor's office under Article 118 of the Lithuanian Constitution . The public prosecutors are not independent in their work, but are subject to the instructions of the respective superordinate body. Public prosecutors usually use the police to investigate.

The public prosecutor's office in Lithuania is structured in three organizational levels: At the national level there is the general public prosecutor's office of the Lithuanian Republic (lit. Lietuvos Respublikos generalinė prokuratūra). These include District Public Prosecutor's Offices (lit. Apygardos Prokuratūra), which in turn are assigned to Public Prosecutor's Offices (lit. Apylinkes Prokuratūra).

Kaunas District Attorney's Office

The Kaunas District Prosecutor's Office is subordinate to the following Public Prosecutor's Offices: Kaunas City and Alytus District, Jonava District, Jurbarkas District, Kaišiadorys District, Kaunas District, Lazdijai District, Marijampolė District, Prienai District, and Vilakiai District.

The Chief Public Prosecutor is Kęstutis Betingis , the Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor are Viktoras Biriukovas, Vladimir Kakoškin and Nerijus Marcinkevičius.

Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office

The Kaunas District Public Prosecutor's Office is subordinate to the following public prosecutor's offices: Vilnius City, Druskininkai City, Ignalina District, Molėtai District, Šalčininkai District, Širvintos District, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė, Varasėna District, Visaraginas District, and Visaraginas City.

The chief public prosecutor is Ramutis Jancevičius , whose deputies are Irmantas Mikelionis, Brunonas Maculevičius and Anatolijus Koržovas.
