The Freiburg State Archive is the archive responsible for the Freiburg administrative region. It preserves the written records of the state middle and local authorities in the administrative district from 1806 and of the central authorities of the state of (southern) Baden from 1945–1952 with the documents of the ministries, the state parliament, the state court and the state chancellery. The Freiburg State Archives have had their headquarters in Colombistraße since 1965.

In addition, there is the tradition of the Baden district offices and courts with source material for local and regional research. The duplicates of the church registers from the 19th century are interesting for questions relating to family and emigrant research . The holdings of the state authorities are supplemented by archival materials from regional middle and lower Reich and federal authorities as well as by extensive collections such as bequests, including the estate of the South Baden state president Leo Wohleb , aristocratic archives, maps, plans, posters and remarkable photo collections.

The Freiburg State Archive has been a department of the Baden-Württemberg State Archive since 2005 .
