history

A first archive law was passed on October 22nd, 1812, and then another by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies on November 12th, 1818. A law of December 12th, 1816 stipulated that each province should have its own archive. These were accordingly called archivi provinciali , which differentiated them from the Grande Archivio del Regno in Naples. Their main task was to keep the official documents that arose in the administrative process. This concerned above all the Intendenze and the subordinate Sottointendenze for taxation, domains, the judicial organs . However, they were not given any supervision over municipal archives.

The archive for L'Aquila was for the province of Abruzzo Ulteriore Secondo , while for Abruzzo Citeriore the archive in Chieti, and for the province Abruzzo Ulteriore Primo that of Teramo. Although it was established by the decree of October 22, 1821, it did not start operating until 1835. In addition to the aforementioned archival material, it also included those from Cittaducale until 1927 , which however then became part of the Rieti Province.

After the unification of Italy, the burdens of the archives were placed on the provinces, but the Ministry of the Interior did not renounce its supervisory rights any more than the national archives administration. This did not change until 1932. The house was only given the status of a state archive with a law from 1963. Sulmona became a Sottosezione or Sezione of the State Archives in 1960 and 1963. It was in the S. Nicola convent. Avezzano was only established in 2000, but is still waiting for a suitable location. Its holdings, like those of all archives, can be traced in the Guida generale degli Archivi di Stato italiani since 1980 , which also contains a bibliography with the main works on the creation of the archive from the years 1872 to 1940 takes place.

The
Palazzo del Governo, which was destroyed in 2009

After the earthquake of 2009 , the archive moved to an industrial building in Bazzano, after having been located in the Convento di Sant'Agostino, which had been rededicated as the administrative center under Napoleon.
