Late Gothic town hall in Middelburg

The Stadhuis Middelburg , the town hall of Middelburg , was voted the second most beautiful building in the Netherlands in June 2007 by the readers of the national Dutch daily Trouw .

The foundation stone for this Flemish-Late Gothic building was laid in 1452. Several generations of the family of the Flemish builder Rombout Keldermans were involved in the construction of this very expensive company at the time. In the 19th century, the architect Pierre Cuypers , like many before him, changed various things about this building.

During the Second World War , it was damaged by a fire in the wedding hall in May 1940, but returned to its original state in the post-war years. In earlier times, this hall was reserved for the ordinaire vierschaar , today's district or district judges ( cantonal judges ).
