The city library Goch was until the beginning of April 2012 at the monastery of 16th place close to the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene in Goch . The brick building erected in 1651 was a wing of the former tertiary convent. Originally this was the home of Beguines who later adopted the rules of a third order . During the secularization under Napoleon , the monastery was closed. During the 19th century the monastery buildings and the church were demolished, with the exception of the wing that still exists today. This building was donated to the Gocher Hospital in 1849 and later served as the city library.

Due to the need for renovation and the lack of accessibility of the three-story building, the library opened on May 2, 2012 in new rooms in a former car dealership at Pfalzdorfer Straße 47 . At first it was only planned to temporarily accommodate the library there until a permanent location could be found. At the beginning of 2012, the premises of the former Liebfrauenkirche had been discussed or even decided on.
