Emergence

The hall was designed as part of the planning of the city park carried out by Ferdinand Sperber and Fritz Schumacher in 1910 , which was commissioned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . While the city park was opened four years later, the construction of the city hall was delayed due to the First World War. The shell was built between 1912 and 1916 and was not completed until 1924.

The facades were designed by Richard Kuöhl . The artistic design of the rooms was in the hands of the artists Otto Fischer-Trachau (1878–1958) and Bernhard Hopp . Fischer-Trachau designed the ceiling in the domed hall and Hopp designed the “wedding hall”, the entrance rooms and the second adjoining hall in the south wing, the “red hall”.

Connection

In 1921 one of the first new lines of the Hamburg tram to the city hall was opened, which led over the city hall bridge .

He could by boat or with a Alsterdampfer -Pendelverkehr the mill Kamper ferry over the Goldbekkanal be achieved. A bathing establishment was also set up in the 1930s. It also still exists today.

destruction

During the Second World War, the town hall was badly damaged by a bomb attack during Operation Gomorrah in July 1943 and was finally demolished in 1951/52. Inconspicuous remains can still be seen today. A large circular fountain basin was later built on parts of the area, on which model builders let their boats go. The stairs have been preserved.
