The town house of Olten is an administrative building and a building tool of modern Swiss architecture in the city of Olten in the canton of Solothurn . With its generous dimensions, the building testifies to the dynamic political attitude of the post-war period in the region at the southern foot of the Jura.

history

For the administration of the city of Olten, which had grown rapidly since the late 19th century and since the Second World War, the older town house built around 1900 was no longer sufficient, and so the town decided to build a new town house. On the site of an old, large farm in the Hübeliquartier and right next to the Hübelischulhaus and the Historical Museum , the community of Olten had the new townhouse built from 1963 to 1966 according to the project by architects Willy Frey , Alois Egger and Werner Peterhans . The architects Bruno and Fritz Haller from Solothurn had won first prize in the previous architecture competition ; however, their project was not carried out.

Building description

The complex between Dornacherstrasse, Konradstrasse and Hübelistrasse consists of a high-rise building for the city administration, a separate hall, the so-called council hall (for the council hall) and a spacious basement with passageways, reception rooms and offices. With the architectural separation of the buildings for the legislative and executive branches, the town house complex symbolizes the democratic organization of the township.

The structural design of the administration high-rise, with its high concrete pillars, the structure of the facade and the equipment with superstructures on the top floor, is derived from Le Corbusier's mighty Unité d'Habitation residential complex near Marseille .

In the town hall there is a police station and a floor for exhibitions in addition to the administration. Works of art by Heinz Schwarz , Matias Spescha , Jacques Neukomm and Urs Hanselmann are installed on the ground floor. On the east side, an underground car park connects to the basement of the town house.
