The city ​​museum in the Franconian town of Herzogenaurach presents the historical events of the 1000-year history of the city as well as the history of the large corporations adidas and Puma as well as the Schaeffler Group , which have their headquarters here.

history

In 1908, the historical association opened its first museum in the city tower with old handicraft tools and folkloric exhibits. During and after the Second World War , however, a large part of the inventory was lost due to looting. From 1969 the collection was housed in the former official palace, it was rebuilt voluntarily by the Herzogenaurach Heimatverein. In autumn 2000 the museum was reopened in the former Hospital of the Holy Spirit on Kirchenplatz.

The hospital goes back to a foundation by Conrad Reyter, who had it built in 1508 to care for the elderly and disabled citizens of the city. The late medieval half-timbered building is now a monument. The massive storey building with two vaulted cellars was built on the ground floor with ashlar masonry on which a multi-storey half-timbered construction rests.

The museum shows the history of the city on an area of ​​over 700 square meters. The exhibition area "City History" thematizes the everyday life of the arable citizens in the medieval town, the organization of the urban community and the rights of the sovereign as well as in the war and crisis years of the first half of the 20th century, up to the settlement of new industry, which the place made world famous.

The area “Crafts and Industry” shows exhibits on the economic development of the city from the Middle Ages to the structural change after the Second World War. The focus is on the companies Adidas and Puma , which are still based in the town today . A private collection added in 1968 includes arts and crafts and bourgeois home decor, graphic sheets and rare printed matter. Sacred paintings and sculptures are exhibited in the former warehouse floor of the hospital.
