City portal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term city portal (often English town portal ) is mainly used for computer role-playing games and describes a safe place within the game world that serves as a node between several sections of the game. Using teleportation or some other time-saving game mechanic, the player can return to the city to get to safety or to equip himself again (for which a shop or something similar is usually available in the city). In fantasy scenarios, the city portal is usually reached through a teleportation spell , in science fiction scenarios, however, a wide variety of technical devices are available.

The city portal appeared in New World Computing's classic role-playing game Might and Magic in the mid-80s and was later used by other development studios such as Blizzard in other titles, for example in Diablo or as a rune stone in the MMORPG World of Warcraft .

In EverQuest , so-called portal stones are used to quickly move from a "central" zone to other zones. There are corresponding portal stones in the central zone and in the zones that can be reached via the portal stones.
