Hildburghausen City Theater

The Hildburghausen City Theater is located on the Werra and on the edge of the city park of the district town of Hildburghausen in Thuringia . It is one of the oldest recorded theaters in Germany.

The Hildburghausen City Theater was initially built by Duke Ernst Friedrich I , presumably in 1721 as a ballroom . In 1755 the ballroom was under Duke Ernst Friedrich III. converted into a theater. A drama school was established in 1765, making it the first drama school in Germany. In 1794, the Hildburghausen City Theater was officially founded by Duke Friedrich . In 1890/91 the theater building was rebuilt and restored. In 1976/78 the theater was renovated again. In 2008, after four years of renovation and remodeling, the theater was ceremoniously returned to its destination in October.
