Main camp IV F

The main camp IV F (Stalag IV F, also spelled Stalag IV-F) for prisoners of war in Hartmannsdorf (near Chemnitz) was established in October 1939 as Dulag IV F and continued as main camp IV F in February 1941 . The prisoners of war were put to work all over Saxony and assigned to the respective workplaces from the camp.

Camp management

The line was in the Hotel Kronprinz on Chemnitzer Straße. Other functions were located in Burgstädter Strasse 26 (formerly Lesch factory, now Möbel Zajons) and in Hauptstrasse 40 (Scheffler factory).

Use of prisoners of war

The main place of work for the prisoners of war of the Stalag IV F was in the dye factory Reh in the Ziegelstrasse 1. Larger external camps were at the airport Altenburg-Nobitz , camp Torgau , camp Ehrenfriedersdorf, fortress Königstein , Krautenz in Markkleeberg . The Heimatverein Hartmannsdorf names other locations for the prisoners of war: farms in and around Hartmannsdorf, Cerny and Sons factory, craftsmen in Hartmannsdorf, loading and unloading at Hartmannsdorf station and the surrounding area, pasta factory, butcher shop, quarry.

Storage occupancy

On May 13, 1941, 18,000 prisoners of war, including 15,000 French, 1,000 Belgians and 2,000 Serbs, were deployed in 700 commandos. On March 28, 1942 there were 21,825 French and 304 Belgian prisoners of war as well as Serbs and Russians.

The camp was liberated on April 14, 1945 by the 4th American Armored Division and the 76th American Infantry Division.

Burial of the dead

Deceased Russian prisoners of war were buried beyond the cemetery wall, exhumed in autumn 1945 and transferred to the Soviet cemetery of honor in Chemnitz-Reichenhain .
