history

The founder, Don Stanley, was the first Canadian to earn a PhD in environmental engineering. He graduated from Harvard University, which he attended on a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship. He obtained his doctorate from the university in 1952. Two years later he set up his own business with DR Stanley & Associate in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1955, he recruited a senior railroad engineer, Herb Roblin, and a civil engineer, Louis Grimble, who previously worked for the provincial government. The company was incorporated in Stanley, Grimble and Roblin Ltd. renamed. With the help of the two new partners, the company diversified quickly.

1970 started a real boom for the company, which ended abruptly due to the recession of the eighties. Don Stanley handed over management of the company to his second partner Ron Triffo in 1983. When Alberta's economic performance collapsed, the Canadian government launched the National Energy Program to stabilize the economy. Triffo became the company's President and COO. Stanley took on the roles of CEO and Chairman. Before the recession, the company employed 400 people. 200 jobs were cut during the recession.

In order to save the company, the company was further diversified. Investments were made in other locations in other provinces and other companies were bought up. Among other things, the urban development company IMC was founded a short time later, employing 200 people. The company opened offices in British Columbia and Saskachewan and expanded internationally. A short time later a branch in Phoenix, Arizona followed with the aim of establishing further branches in the southwest of the USA.

Due to the success of IMC, more than 20 subsidiaries with different brands have developed. In the early 1990s, the companies were brought together under one brand name, the Stanley Technology Group. The company employed 900 people in the first half of the 1990s. In 1994 the company's shares were placed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

In 1998 Triffo took on the role of chairman, which he held until 2011. From 2011, Tony Franceschini (formerly Vice President) took over the role of President and CEO. After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1975, Franceschini began his career in a consulting firm in Toronto. When Franceschini took over the post of president, the company employed more than 2,200 people in 49 branches.

In 2005 the company's shares were placed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2008 Franceschini retired. In 2008 Robert Gomes became President and CEO of the company. Gomes holds an engineering degree from the University of Alberta and joined the company in 1988.

Around 2008, Gomes led the company through the worst recession in years. Between 2008 and 2011, sales rose from $ 1.4 billion to $ 1.8 billion. The number of employees rose from 8,000 to 12,000. The company acquired 16 companies and was able to expand its market share in North America and worldwide.
