Star of Sierra Leone
The Star of Sierra Leone ( German Stern von Sierra Leone ) is the largest rough diamond found in Sierra Leone so far (as of August 2017) . It was excavated in the Dominica Mine in Sierra Leone on February 14, 1972. It weighed 968.9 carats (193.78 g), making it the third largest rough diamond ever found.
The Star of Sierra Leone was created by the jeweler Harry Winston for 2.5 million US dollars bought and first cut into a stone with 143.2 carats, the not flawless was. Later this was divided into 17 stones, 13 of them flawless. The largest flawless single stone has 53.96 carats (10.792 g), six of the stones have been combined to form a brooch (Star of Sierra Leone brooch).
The Star of Sierra Leone is considered to be perfectly chemically pure (Category IIa), which only applies to about one percent of all diamonds worldwide.
