The Stara trta in spring

The Stara trta (Slov. Old Vine ) is said to be over 400 years old and is said to be the oldest vine in the world that sprouts every year and carries grapes. The Žametovka vine grows in the Lent district in Maribor on the left bank of the Drava (→ viticulture in Slovenia ). Offshoots of this vine thrive, for example, in the castle courtyard of Ptuj and in the residential complex Hilnteichstrasse 21a in Graz. Every year at the beginning of October up to 50 kilograms of grapes are solemnly harvested and fermented into a wine that is drawn onto artistically designed bottles. It is exclusive because of its rarity, its quality is usually rather modest.

The Stara trta is listed as the oldest vine in the world in the Guinness Book of Records .
