Startrade (own spelling StarTrade ) is a real-time space economy simulation that takes up the game principle of Elite . The game is free ( freeware ) and open source .

concept

StarTrade represents a new edition of the game Privateer , which in turn was a new edition of the classic Elite . There are also similarities to Freelancer , in which some borrowings from the previous games have also been incorporated.

The aim of the game is, as with the previous classics, to earn money through trading, piracy or shooting prizes for pirates. As in Elite, the player starts with a poorly performing, weakly armed spaceship and has to gradually buy better equipment with the money he has earned in order to earn even more money.

Alliances

  • "The Alliance" represent a space police force and earn money by launching prizes for destroying pirate spaceships and protecting the merchant ships.
  • "The pirates" are the pirates who destroy merchant ships and steal cargo and then sell it.
  • "The traders" earn their money by trading in the goods available on various trading posts, the prices of which change according to the laws of supply and demand.

The player's affiliation to the alliances results from the actions in the course of the game.

history

After the earth has been made uninhabitable by several asteroid impacts, mankind moves into space to start a new life there.

graphic

The game has a kind of dark comic-book look that mixes with retro pixel-egg. The perspective from which the player observes the action is a GTA2-like bird's eye view.

technology

StarTrade was programmed under BlitzMax and uses OpenGL for graphics output. This makes StarTrade platform-independent.

Expandability

The game is largely modifiable, as all game rules and objects, including graphics and sounds, are freely accessible. Creating a new spaceship takes z. B. about half an hour. In addition to the standard ships, there are also larger units, such as cruisers or frigates with heavy armament in turrets.

Meaningful game universe

The game universe is enlivened by independent non-player characters who - with a simple AI in the background - control their ships. For example, it is possible that the player will most likely encounter dealers where the cheapest goods are available. Trade routes are created by themselves. The police tried to protect the traders and involved the pirates in a fight.
