Station IX

The Station IX was a secret development manufacture of the British special operations executive unit during the Second World War . The station produced command equipment primarily for agents of the SOE and other British secret services.

Station IX was housed in a mansion called 'The Frythe'. It was about an hour's drive north of London near the town of Welwyn . The Station IX was one of several laboratories in England and was under the command of Major John Dolphin .

In the Station IX weapons were developed or evolved from conventional models for the SOE use. In addition, a large number of items of equipment specially manufactured for special purposes were produced. For example, radios (the Paraset ), weapons, time fuses ( pencil fuses ), explosive projectiles and camouflaged traps for agents and secret riot groups. The foldable miniature motorcycle (the Welbike ), a silenced pistol (the Welrod ) and several miniature diving vehicles (the Welman and Sleeping Beauty ) became known for paratroopers .
