The Steckenweg (also: Stöckaweg) is a very old connecting path (footpath / Höhenweg ) between the municipality of Dornbirn , district Haslach and the district of Reute in Hohenems in Vorarlberg , Austria .

Today it is mostly only used as a hiking trail by locals and is no longer shown in newer hiking maps of the region. The Steckenweg is officially closed until further notice due to the risk of rock falls. However, this rock fall, which led to the closure, was lost before 1994 and the area around the Breitenberg has been known to be geologically troubled for centuries. The path is, despite the occasional blocking signs and missing hiking markings, quite well frequented and easy to recognize, although it is no longer officially maintained.

description

The path leads from Gasthaus Haslach in a south-west direction on the paved road over the bridge over the Fallbach . After this bridge, swiveling to the left, the path leads in a south-easterly direction as a forest path along the Fallbach stream (on the left a large retention basin ) , which has been built into a road, up towards the clearly visible waterfall. After about 250 meters the forest path branches off and the Steckenweg leads right hand, deviating from the path to the waterfall, quite evenly further upwards now in a south-westerly direction and largely maintains this direction. The path becomes narrower to a pure footpath and after a short time the rock fall is reached, which led to the official closure of the path over 20 years ago. This can be overcome without major difficulties and the path now leads above the quarry with beautiful views z. B. on the Breitenberg (yellow rock), the Karren and the Karrenseilbahn , the urban area of Dornbirn, the Alpine Rhine Valley to Switzerland , etc. The path finally joins a wider pasture path in Reute .

Almost the entire route leads through the forest .

The path requires surefootedness, a head for heights and equipment with good hiking boots. The path should only be used when it is dry. In some places smaller children have to be led by the hand. In the Reute area, the path leads along the forest over pastures. Here you should keep your distance from the grazing animals.

The closest hiking base is the Gasthaus Haslach in Haslach or the Gasthaus Berghof in Reute in Hohenems. The hike from Haslach to Reute takes about an hour.
