Stefan à Wengen
Stefan à Wengen (born on August 12, 1964 in Basel ) is a Swiss painter and draftsman.
life and work
As a teenager, Stefan à Wengen found out through systematic research that he was descended directly from the à Wengen family of painters in Basel, which dates back to the mid-16th century.
From 1981 to 1986 he attended the art and general trade school in Basel . After completing his training, he won a scholarship from the Kiefer-Hablitzel Foundation for his abstract paintings in 1987 and 1988, and in 1988, at the invitation of John Armleder, he moved to his studio in New York (USA) for two years.
In 1989 and 2000 he received the Federal Prize for Fine Art for his now representational painting. In 1991 he moved to Cologne, since 1999 he has lived and worked in Düsseldorf.
In Switzerland, à Wengen remains present through numerous solo and group exhibitions, such as the exhibition The Mission 2010 in the Lucerne Art Museum . He also exhibits regularly in Germany, as well as in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain, Israel and the USA. As a co-founder of the Spam-Contemporary project space in Düsseldorf, he is also active as a curator and mediator.
During his training in the 1980s, Stefan à Wengen was not enthusiastic about the expressive-figurative painting that was dominant at the time, but about the more rational “New Geometry”. He broke away from abstraction by collecting and drawing globe logos; This he added later under the impression of reading Georges Bataille's The Obscene Work. The story of the eye in the eye sockets of skulls.
