Stefan Brakensiek

Stefan Brakensiek (born April 13, 1956 in Bielefeld ) is a German historian who researches the early modern period .

Live and act

After studying to be a teacher in German and history, Stefan Brakensiek received his doctorate in 1990 at the Faculty of History and Philosophy at Bielefeld University with the dissertation “Agrarian reform and rural society”. From 1991 to 1996 he was first managing director and then a research assistant in the collaborative research center “History of the Modern Bourgeoisie”. In 1997 the habilitation took place at the University of Bielefeld with a study on the administration and life of civil servants in the Sattelzeit (1750 to 1830). This was followed by positions at the universities in Potsdam , Kassel , Gießen , Münster and Dresden .

Since the 2006/07 winter semester, Stefan Brakensiek has been Professor of Early Modern History at the Historical Institute of the University of Duisburg-Essen . He is the spokesman for the graduate school “Prevention, Foresight, Prediction. Dealing with contingency through future action ". From 2012 to 2016 he was a member of the history review board of the German Research Foundation . Since 2011 he has been chairman of the board of the Society for Agricultural History , and since 2012 a member of the board of the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute for German-Jewish History in Essen.
