Stefan Hochuli

Stefan Hochuli (* 1959 in Aarau ) is a Swiss archaeologist and monument conservator. Hochuli since 1991 Canton archaeologist by train and since 2001 head of the Office of Historic Monuments and Archeology of the Canton train.

Life

Stefan Hochuli studied Prehistory and Early History / Provincial Roman Archeology, Architectural History / Monument Preservation and Ethnology at the University of Bern and graduated in 1989 with a licentiate and a monograph on the Medium Bronze and Hallstatt Period discovery site Wäldi-Hohenrain ( Canton Thurgau ). As part of a research assistant at the University of Bern, he wrote a monograph on the Neolithic and Bronze Age lakeside settlements of Arbon-Bleiche, thereby obtaining his doctorate in 1992.

In 1991 he was elected canton archaeologist for the canton of Zug and headed the development and expansion of archeology in the canton of Zug. Since 2001 he has been head of the Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology in the Canton of Zug.

From 1994 to 2003, Hochuli was a member of the board of the Swiss Society for Prehistory and Protohistory (SGUF), today Archeology Switzerland (AS), which he chaired from 1997 to 2000. From 1997 to 2002 he was on the board of the Society for Swiss Underwater Archeology (GSU). From 2002 to 2009 he was a board member of the Association of Swiss Cantonal Archaeologists (VSK), today the Conference of Swiss Cantonal Archaeologists (KSKA), and from 2008 to 2009 as its President.

As a consultant to the Federal Commission for Monument Preservation (EKD) (1997-2005), later as its member and vice-president (2005-2015), he wrote numerous reports and dealt with fundamental questions of monument and site protection, especially at the interfaces between construction - and ground monument maintenance. He was also involved in the formulation of the guiding principles for monument preservation in Switzerland.

Hochuli has been a member of the Monuments Commission of the Canton of Lucerne since 1999, has been a member of the Monuments Commission of the Canton of Zug since 2001 and has been a member of the Archaeological Commission of the Canton of Bern since 2009.

Hochuli is married, has two adult children and lives in Hünenberg See, Canton Zug.
