Stefan the Serb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kir Stefan the Serb ( Serbian Стефан Србин / Stefan Srbin; * around 1360; † around 1430) was a Serbian Orthodox monk. As a scribe he composed Byzantine hymns in Church Slavonic, Old Serbian and Greek.

Since not a single piece of Serbian music was preserved until the end of the 14th century, his works are among the oldest in Serbian music history. There is insufficient information about his person. Andrija Jakovljević took the view that he lived from 1360 to 1430 in the monastic republic of Athos , possibly in the Hilandar monastery . Other historians assume that he lived in Smederevo in the middle of the 15th century and is identical to Stefan Domestik, a son of the Serbian despot Đurađ , mentioned in manuscripts of that time .

One of his most important works is the song Ninja sili nebesnije s nami nevidimo služet ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ниња сили небесније с нами невидимо служет ). The only manuscript of this song from the 15th century was burned during the air raid on Belgrade by the German Air Force in 1941.

The singer Pavle Aksentijević presents several works of Stefan's in various albums.

Stefan the Serb was mentioned in 1980 in the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , vol. 18, London 1980, page 93 as a historical musician.
