The singing stones of Le Guildo ( French called Pierres sunny , sounding stones ) are amphibolites on the left bank of the Arguenon , a coastal river that flows into the English Channel . They are located in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo across from Le-Guildo in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany in France .

The stones are round and smooth, shiny black and large. Some of them weigh over ten tons and are made of a heavy metallic stone that sounds like a bell when struck by a smaller stone.

The legend of Gargantua

Like many Breton stones, the stones are linked to a legend. Here she is referring to an episode in the life of the giant Gargantua , a mythological figure who is very present in Brittany. Legend has it that he spent part of his life in Brittany, swallowing the stones and spitting them out again. The versions of the legends differ in how and when he swallowed the stones.

The "Pierre Sonnante de Saint Gildas", on the other hand, is a large stone that lies on a pedestal in the Saint-Gildas hermitage in Bieuzy-les-Eaux in the Morbihan department in Brittany.
