Colmeallie stone circle

The stone circle of Colmeallie is a stone circle of the Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC) type, which is particularly widespread on the River Dee with almost 100 specimens. Colmeallie is located in Glen Esk, about 8.0 km north of Edzell Castle , southwest of the eponymous Colmeallie farm next to the B966 road from Tarfside to Loch Lee, north of the North Esk River in Angus in Scotland .

A characteristic of the RSC is a "lying stone" accompanied by two standing, high, often tapering "flank stones" that are located within the circle or close to the circle.

Colmeallie is the remainder of a rarer concentric stone circle, most of the stones of which were lost in 1882 when a road was built. It is located on a hill about 15.5 m in diameter and 0.6 m high. Only three stones of the outer circle (A, B and C) are preserved in situ and allow the reconstruction of a circle with a diameter of 14.5 m. Four smaller stones of the inner circle are preserved in the east about 2.0 m within the outer circle and a 2.1 m high stone (designated as D) stands in the south. He is standing upright, but this cannot be an in situ position. To the west of this stone there are three lying stones, one of which measures approximately 3.0 × 2.2m × 0.5m. Its shape, size and positioning in the south-west of the circle indicate an identification as a lying stone. However, this can only be confirmed if "D" was set up at a later point in time, which cannot be precisely determined.

The antiquarian Andrew Jervise (1820–1878), who took up the circle in 1853, wrote that elderly locals could remember that the circle was more complete but had recently been looted for building materials.
