Templebryan North Stone Circle
The stone circle of Templebryan North (also called Druid's Temple ) is located north of Clonakilty in the townland of Templebryan North ( Irish Teampall Brianaid Thuaidh ) in County Cork in Ireland .
It is a remnant of a circle of which only four stones remain, while one that has fallen over lies in the northwest. A 0.7 m high block of quartz , the " Cloch Gréine " (Eng. Sun stone) stands near the center of the circle, which is a typical variant for the region. Originally, the circle is said to have had at least nine stones and a diameter of about 9.5 m. This is supported by a report from 1743. The standing stones have heights of 1.4 m to 2.2 m and horizontal tops. An axial stone, an outlier ( English outlier ) in the southwest has a particularly flat top. The circle is considered to be one of the rare Irish versions of the Recumbent Stone Circle . Of the portal, which is assigned to the type of circle, only the eastern 2.2 m high stone has survived.
Multiple or Axial Circle Indicator (ASC)
They are symmetrical and arranged so that the so-called “axial stone” is directly opposite two stones, which are usually the highest in the circle and mark the entrance. It is typical, but not always, that the height of the stones in the circle is reduced in the direction of the axial stone. He is constantly in the southwest. In some circles corpse burn was discovered in small unmarked pits, for example at Drombeg in West Cork.
Nearby
About 300 m northwest is a containment with graves and the rest of a oratory , one or two Souterrains , a source ( Tobernakilla ) and a Bullaun . The approximately 3.3 m high, very slender Oghamstein from Templebryan North is also located in this enclosure.
