Stone cross Graefenhain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stone cross Graefenhain is a medieval atonement or murder cross . It is located in Graefenhain on Keulenbergstrasse in the wall of house no. 29. It was built in the 14th / 15th centuries. As with many other atonement crosses, more precise dates are unknown. What is striking is the clear and regularly symmetrical formation of the cross, which is unusual for the region, as well as its smooth surface. It has damage to the head and left cross arm. On the front, typical for the region, is incised the murder tool with which the murder victim was killed at this point. This is a lifting hoe .

The treasure trove of legends knows how the Graefenhain cross was supposed to have come about. Accordingly, two carpenters should have quarreled over a girl. In order to get rid of the rival, one of them quickly killed the other with his ax (the image of the hoe can easily be interpreted as an ax).
