The Stelmužė Oak (2007)

The Stelmužė Oak ( Lithuanian Stelmužės ąžuolas ) is a natural monument in Lithuania . The English oak stands in a former park near Stelmužė in Rajongemeinde Zarasai .

The oak is the oldest tree in Lithuania and the third oldest and most powerful in Europe with an estimated age of 1000 to 1500 years and a trunk circumference of 958 centimeters. In 2016 it was about 19 meters high.

The tree has been scientifically observed and researched since 2005. The aim is to maintain the physiological and biomechanical viability of the tree in the long term. Rūta Baškytė, head of the State Nature Conservation Agency in Lithuania, said that it was important to preserve the Stelmužė oak as part of Lithuanian history for future generations. In 2010 there were three other protected oak trees in Lithuania with a trunk circumference of more than 7 meters. The care plan developed and implemented by Lithuanian, Czech and English scientists is designed so that the oak will live for at least another 300 years.

In 2016, it was voted the first Lithuanian tree of the year in the first election.
