The Stenbockhaus (Estonian: Stenbocki maja ) is the seat of the Estonian government in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( German  Reval ).

location

It is located on the edge of Toompea in Reval's historic old town on Friedensgerichtstraße (Estonian Rahukohtu tänav ), at Friedensgerichtstraße 3. Its location on the northern edge of Toompea above the old town makes it visible from afar.

Architecture and history

The very representative building was originally planned as a courthouse, but was not completed by the state due to financial constraints. The landlord Jakob Pontus Stenbock took over the project , which began in 1784 based on a design by Johann Mohr , and had it completed as his city palace by 1792. The house was designed strictly in the classicism style . The balcony supported by six columns on the side facing the steep slope is particularly dominant . In addition to the main house, a lower auxiliary building was built, which extends semicircularly around the inner courtyard.

From 1855 the building served as a boarding school for the knight and cathedral school in Reval . At the end of the 19th century it became the seat of a court. In 1890/91 the balcony was removed. At the end of the time of the Soviet occupation of Estonia, it also served the judiciary, as several Reval district courts were housed here until 1987. However, the condition of the building had deteriorated so much that it was considered to be in danger of collapsing and was evacuated in Soviet times. A renovation took place from 1996 to 2000, during which the balcony was also added again. The Estonian government met in the building for the first time in 2000 and has been using it since then.

The members of the Estonian government who perished as a result of communist- motivated violence are commemorated on a plaque facing Toompea.

The house was registered as a monument on April 15, 1997 and is listed under number 3013 in the Estonian Monument Register.
