István, a király (Eng. Stephan, the King) is a Hungarian rock opera that premiered in 1983. The music was composed by Levente Szörényi, the lyrics are by János Bródy. The work is based on the play Ezredforduló (turn of the millennium) by Miklós Boldizsár, who was also co-author of the libretto. The rock opera deals with the accession to the throne of the first Hungarian king Stephan I in the year 1000.

action

After the death of Grand Duke Géza , it is an open question who will be his successor: according to the new Christian rule, his son Stephan , who has already converted to Christianity, or, according to old tribal tradition, the now eldest Koppány , Géza's cousin. Koppány fears that under Stephan, who is married to the German duke's daughter Gisela von Bayern and who recognizes the Pope, Hungary will come under foreign influence and lose the old traditions. Stephan offers him the throne if he converts to Christianity, but Koppány indignantly refuses. No one wants to submit to the other, so that there is finally a battle in which Stephan wins. Koppány's daughter Reka, who has already converted to Christianity, asks Stephan for mercy for the vanquished. At the instigation of his mother Sarolt , Stephan refuses with a heavy heart and has Koppány cut into four as a deterrent. Then Stephan is crowned king.
