Sarolt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarolt (* around 950 ; † around 1008 ) was the wife of Grand Duke Géza of Hungary from 971 to 997, Grand Duchess of Hungary.

Surname

Her name Sarolt (Sar-oldu) is of Turkish origin and means " white weasel ". The Slavic population also called her "Beleknegini", which means "white queen".

Life

She was a daughter of Gyula of Transylvania and was probably brought up in the Eastern Orthodox faith. Sarolt allegedly exerted a strong influence on her husband, which also extended to the affairs of government. After the death of her husband in 997, the next-eldest Koppány von Somogy (cousin of Géza) laid claim to the leadership of the Magyars according to the tradition of the seniority principle . In addition to power, he could also claim marriage with the widow. He moved with an army to Veszprém , where Sarolt resided, but was killed in the fighting for the inheritance and Sarolt's son, King Stephen (István) the Saint , was crowned the first king of Hungary shortly afterwards.
