Stephan A. König

Stephan A. König (* 1960 in Mainz ) is a German neuropediatrician and professor at the Medical Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He was acting director of the University Children's Hospital Mannheim.

Life

König completed his studies in human medicine at the University of Heidelberg. After four years as an assistant doctor at the University Children's Clinics in Heidelberg and FU Berlin , he conducted research at the I. Physiological Institute of the University of Heidelberg on the central regulation of the autonomic nervous system . Until 2007 he was head of neuropediatrics at the University Children's Hospital Mannheim. He was particularly interested in epileptology , including the side effects of anti-epileptic drugs. In the 1990s he established the theory of central chemoreceptors about the intracellular pH of respiratory neurons.

As part of his research, he set up an internet-based database for epilepsy and a neurophysiological laboratory for clinical autonomous research at the University Children's Hospital in Mannheim. In 1999, König and others founded the Association for Neurologically Ill Children Mannheim e. V. to bridge supply bottlenecks for disabled children and young people. Since 2007 he has been one of the few doctors in Germany who exclusively work in neuropediatrics with his practice in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . A branch practice has been established in Schriesheim since 2019.

König has been married to Nayla Samina Shazi-König since 2011. The couple have two sons.

Services

König is active in numerous committees and has so far produced more than 130 scientific publications in the field of neuropediatrics and clinical physiology. In addition to valproic acid, his scientific research focused on the autonomic nervous system. For the first time he developed norm values ​​for pupillometry and heart rate variability for children and adolescents.
