The Stephen Avenue is a large pedestrianized shopping street in downtown Calgary , Alberta , Canada . It is only open to pedestrians during the day; motorized traffic is allowed to run between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The street is known for Calgary's most exclusive restaurants, cafes and bars. There are several shops, exclusive boutiques and specialty stores in the street. Larger shopping centers such as the Core Shopping Center, Bankers Hall, Fashion Central, Scotia Center and the Bay department store are located there.

On the street is also Calgary's largest exhibition hall, the Telus Convention Center , to which the two hotels Hyatt Regency Calgary and Calgary Marriott are connected. The larger shopping malls offer nightclubs for party-loving, nocturnal people.

history

The street was named after George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen , the first President of the Canadian Pacific Railway . Stephen Avenue is home to a variety of historic buildings in the city that were listed as a Historic Monument in 1992. Many of the buildings are made of sandstone and were rebuilt after a major fire in 1886 that almost destroyed the entire city.

Under the name Stephen Avenue National Historic Site of Canada , the pass was added to the directory of the National Historic Site of Canada on July 18, 2002 .
