Stephen Heilman

Martin Stephen Heilman (born December 25, 1933 in Tarentum (Pennsylvania) ) is an American physician and engineer, founder of the medical technology company Medrad.

Heilman was a medical professional who founded the Medrad company in Indianola, near Pittsburgh, in 1964 to market his invention, the first angiographic injector. This became a successful medical technology company. In 1972 he met the doctor Michel Mirowski , who had developed an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) with Morton Mower . Mirowski and Morton originally worked with Medtronic, but they were no longer interested in further development. Heilman recognized the potential and brought the engineer Alois Langer into the development team. In 1980 the first ICD was implanted. After FDA approval in 1985, they sold the development company Intec to Eli Lilly for $ 100 million.

In 2002 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
