Lists on the subject

The Sterling SAR-87 was the design for a military automatic rifle of the late twentieth century. The Sterling Assault Rifle (SAR) was jointly developed by Sterling Armaments of the United Kingdom and Chartered Industries of Singapore based on the Armalite AR-18 . It was also examined by the British armed forces, but was soon rejected as they were already planning the introduction of the SA80 . The SAR-87 was a robust weapon that combined the reliability of the AR-18 with the versatility of the M16 . It could be converted from the caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO to the caliber 9 × 19 mm by changing the barrel and slide. A submachine gun was thus also available for police use. However, there was no sale. Eventually Sterling Armaments was bought and closed by British Aerospace . This also stopped production of the weapon, with fewer than 100 rifles of the model being produced.
