The non-profit association Sternwarte Limburg eV was founded in 2004. In the year it was founded, the association took over the empty former Limburg animal shelter from the city of Limburg and converted it into an observatory .
Today you can find a lecture room for 30 visitors, an observatory with a roll-up roof and a dome and an observation platform on the site.
In spring 2017, a further observatory was built specifically for solar observation.
The Johann Christian Senckenberg School in Runkel and Villmar is one of the more than 50 members of the Limburg observatory . The school has an astronomy group that uses the data from the Pan-STARRS-1 survey telescope to actively search for unknown asteroids.
The observation of minor planets will be further intensified from 2020. The IAU Minor Planet Center station code is L56
