The Orion observatory is a small club and public observatory in Martinsberg in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria . The former private observatory was renovated in 2007 by a local astro club and in 2008 it was equipped with a meteor camera from the European fireball measurement network .

history

The observatory was privately built between 1966 and 1969 by the Viennese pensioner Josef Trinko. It is located in the district of Oed in the market town of Martinsberg on the so-called Halterriedel at about 900  m above sea level. A. The then oldest private observatory in Lower Austria came into the possession of the municipality of Martinsberg in 1999. In the years that followed, the observatory, which had since fallen into disrepair, was renovated by a local association and reopened in 2007.

In 2008 the Austrian Astronomical Association set up the first automatic meteor camera station in Austria. On August 8, 2009, it was put into operation with a ceremony.

The current research and public observatory is open to the public with guided tours. It can also be reached on foot via the 9 km long Sternwarteweg, which leads from Martinsberg to the waiting area.

Instruments

The main instrument for the star guides is a Cassegrain reflector telescope with a 310 mm aperture and. approx. 4.30 m equivalent focal length.
