The Zollern-Alb observatory is located on the south-western edge of Brittheim , a district of Rosenfeld in the Zollernalb district in the foreland of the Swabian Alb . It is one of the largest public observatories in Germany.

history

The first considerations for building a modern observatory go back to 1996. In the following year, a support association and an operating group were founded, which became the Verein Sternwarte Zollern-Alb, Rosenfeld-Brittheim e. V. passed over. In 2004, the association received funds from the Baden-Württemberg State Foundation, the city of Rosenfeld, the Zollernalb district and companies based in the district. After a planning and construction phase, the observatory was inaugurated on September 29, 2006.

Furnishing

The main telescope of the observatory is a Cassegrain telescope with an 80 cm primary mirror. The telescope can be used both in the primary focus at an aperture ratio of f / 3 and in the secondary focus at f / 10. A sun station and a deep sky station are being planned. A radio astronomy station is under construction. There is a large lecture and conference room in the observatory building. A separate domed building with a 20 cm Newtonian telescope is used as a youth observatory .

Educational program

The focus is on conveying astronomical knowledge and research results and current celestial events. For this purpose, lectures and sky observations with the devices of the observatory are offered. Workshops are held regularly on special topics, some of which are seasonal. In addition, the observatory takes an active part in local and national exhibitions. Special tours, especially for schools and kindergartens, are an integral part of the observatory's educational offer. For particularly interested young people, the observatory offers to work in its youth group.
