The shaft ( helmet ) of a hand tool is its handle part as a handle . Its shape is usually elongated, which is also clear from the designation stem .

The shaft is usually made of wood, less often of plastic or metal (especially aluminum). In the Stone Age , wooden shafts were also made from bone , horn or antlers .

Shanks means the connection of the working part and the shank. This technique is very old, see stock (prehistory and early history) . Different types of shaft allow the chronological classification of tool finds from the Stone Age.
